The question of whether Burgundy limestone is suitable for outdoor, is mainly related to the possible freezing of the limestone and its resistance to bad weather. Check out our dedicated FAQ for more details on France frost zones.
83 stones are recognized by the INPI as Natural Limestones from Burgundy. Out of these 83 stones, very few are only intended for the interior. By habit and custom (and by shortcut), we often mean that the clearer a stone is, the less resistant to freeze it is. This can be confirmed in some cases : Charmot or Buffon stone tending towards beige / white colors but this is not a general truth (Semond stone also beige color is adapted according to the regions outside).
As always the answer is rarely yes or no - additional questions are needed : in which region (in what climate) will the stone be laid ? Is it for a horizontal (paving or flooring) or vertical (facade) cladding ? Stone is more exposed to frost in flooring than in facades.
Convictions on this subject are also evolving : Corton stone used in particular in Burgundy in the 1970s - 1980s in window frames, thresholds... is now considered a freezing stone because the stone can disintegrate on the surface.
Ask us for your terrace project at the beginning of your search ! Depending on the project (use, region...) we can guide you to the appropriate limestones and eliminate from your field of possibilities the irrelevant stones : Bleu de Lignières, Charmot, Buffon... Beyond the question of resistance, keep in mind that light stones (white / beige) are particularly bright in sunny regions (and can dazzle). For example, in PACA, choose the stone of Lanvignes Doré-Jaune over the stone of Semond Clair Veiné.
In our product pages, you will find on the left a clarification on the destination: Interior and Exterior or only Interior.
Note : the thickness has no impact on the gelivity of the stone, which is related to the intrinsic and geological characteristics of the material.
