COMBLANCHIEN LIMESTONE - BURGUNDY

Comblanchien stone is the most well-known of Burgundy stones.

Its reputation and prominence are mainly due to its resistance and the appearance of this stone.

  • This hard stone is one of the most resistant, especially to frost (240 freeze/thaw cycles - referred to as severe frost resistance) and is also suitable for wet areas (kitchen and bathroom).
  • It withstands all uses, even intensive use and road construction.

Also, there is no category of products that cannot be made from Comblanchien stone.

Comblanchien limestone has similar aspects to marble with a light beige background and a slight pink veining. Its grain is particularly fine, tight. There are few shells. Overall, it is rather very homogeneous.

THE COLORS OF THE LIMESTONE

COMBLANCHIEN LIGHT

Comblanchien Light limestone is the purest part of the Comblanchien quarry. It is the most homogeneous bench. Its pinkish beige color has a very fine grain. It is enhanced in a honed finish, ideal for engravings.

This stone has been used in the Taipei 101 Tower in Taiwan (24,000 m²), the BHV in Paris, the Cité de la Gastronomie in Dijon, the VIP lounge at Orly airport, and in many private estates in France and Europe.

COMBLANCHIEN SLIGHTLY SPECKLED

In the quarry, there is a 'stratum' (which means a level or a vein depending on geological characteristics) of stone that we call Slightly Speckled Comblanchien. The stone is in the same tones as Comblanchien Clair but with more shells and fossils; it retains the same technical characteristics. This stone was very fashionable in the 1970s with a polished finish. It can be seen, notably, in our showroom in Comblanchien."

COMBLANCHIEN BLENDED

The Comblanchien Blended is a very aesthetic blend of Comblanchien Clair, Slightly Speckled Comblanchien, and Speckled Comblanchien. In this case, we do not sort the different benches. This helps to lower the cost of the material. The Comblanchien Blended is widely used for flamed and bush-hammered finishes. It is also in this blend that we offer sawn opus incertum in Comblanchien.

Please note for all our photos: the angle of the shot or the brightness can result in quite varied color rendering. Feel free to visit our showrooms or to order samples.

USES OF THIS STONE

Our entire range can be made from Comblanchien stone: kitchen, bathroom, coping stones, buildings, courtyards and gardens, paving, funeral pavers... No limitation on use as it is suitable for outdoor and even for intensive use and road construction (terrace, driveway, coping stones...). It is even the stone we recommend first for road projects.

Regardless of your region, this stone will be suitable for outdoor use in a flamed or bush-hammered finish.

FINISHED OF THIS STONE

Comblanchien limestone is unique. As it is a hard stone, we cannot achieve the same finishes as with other so-called semi-hard stones. Only 3 finishes are possible :

  • Honed : the surface of the stone is smooth/soft, the edges are straight.
  • Flammed : With a large blowtorch followed by a jet of water, we create a thermal shock that causes the superficial grains to burst, which textures the surface of the stone to make it non-slip, the edges remain straight
  • Bush-hammered : bush-hammering is a traditional tool, with this 'bush-hammer' hammer, the stone is struck in such a way as to create hollows and bumps. This is the most non-slip finish, and is especially recommended for public establishments outdoors.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Originating from the Côte basin (extraction site : Comblanchien), the quarry is just behind our workshop. Comblanchien stone is a hard stone (density 2650kg/m³) with a porosity of 1%.

It is a limestone with a very fine grain, with some fossils and pink veins. Presence of quartz and iron (rust spots) can be found. This is a micritic limestone from the Jurassic period, Bathonian stage. It is 160 million years old. As a reminder, Burgundy's natural stones were formed by sedimentation; this was the ocean floor 160 million years ago. As already mentioned, its frost resistance is 240 freeze/thaw cycles (severe frost resistance).
