Washbasin, basin, or hand basin: what are the differences? Is a washbasin synonymous with a sink? There are numerous terms in the world of bathrooms and, by extension, kitchens. Let's try to untangle these different terms together.
A hand washbasin, like a regular washbasin, is used for washing hands (not for cleaning utensils or food). They are found in bathrooms, washrooms, or toilets. The hand washbasin is a small-sized sink, suitable for compact spaces. There are also corner hand washbasins to save even more space. The faucet with a hand washbasin is almost always positioned directly on the basin and not on a countertop.
What does "small-sized" mean ? There is no official definition, but typically it means less than 30 cm in depth and less than 40 cm in length. A common dimension is 35 x 25 cm. Hand washbasins in toilets are often wall-mounted to free up floor space.
In preamble, a washbasin or basin in a kitchen is no longer referred to as such, but becomes a sink or a scullery sink. The room's purpose affects its designation. Washbasin or Basin = Bathroom // Sink - Scullery Sink = Kitchen
A stone washbasin is a standalone element that traditionally is a pedestal washbasin (totem) or a wall-hung washbasin. It can be directly fixed to the wall. Washbasins are easy to maintain, aesthetically pleasing, and practical.
A basin is a surface-mounted or inset element on a support. It is not standalone, which is the key difference from washbasins. The basin is associated with a touch of modernity, whereas the washbasin leans towards retro aesthetics. Most of the time, the faucet is fixed to the support (countertop) and not directly to the basin itself (although both configurations exist). The back part of the countertop that accommodates the faucet is called the "faucet deck."
In the realm of stone, we mainly find basins rather than washbasins. Our basins come in various shapes : rectangular, round, oval, square... We also create pedestal stone basins, freestanding basins, or barrel-shaped basins.
