Stones for Roadways, Specific Characteristics

Which stones are best suited for roadways ?

83 limestones exist in Burgundy but not all are recommended for roadways, far from it. The ultimate hard stone in Burgundy, and the reference for roadways, is Comblanchien limestone.

Comblanchien has a density greater than 2600 kg/m³ with porosity below 1%. It is a very fine-grained limestone. No frost damage is observed after 240 freeze-thaw cycles. There are numerous examples of projects using this stone in France and worldwide : cubic pavements, tramway platforms, curbs, sidewalks...

How thick should stones be for roadways ?

It is difficult to provide general advice because several parameters need to be considered, including the support and estimated traffic of the roadway (such as semi-truck passage frequency, etc.). We offer our pavements in 6 cm thickness (more suitable for driveways around private homes) and also in 8 cm, 10 cm, and 12 cm thicknesses, which are specifically adapted for roadways.
