Stepping stones formats and laying

The Japanese steps aim to mark a path between 2 outdoor spaces for example between a terrace and a swimming pool. They are also used to design an alley. They bring lightness and structure to your landscaping. They also have a practical role of not getting dirty in rainy or muddy weather.

Japanese step format : rectangle or round

Several formats exist, the 2 main ones being rectangular or round (ovoid) formats. We can achieve the dimensions you want. As standard, we offer rectangular japanese steps of 60 x 30 cm. 30 cm is for us a width adapted to a good walking comfort. This is often a standard width for stairs.

In terms of finishing, we offer Japanese steps brushed with sawn cut (on the edges) in the stone you want (mainly in Golden-Yellow Lanvignes stone or Blended Semond which are non-freezing) or Japanese steps that are rough from the quarry – kind of rare and therefore more expensive and longer to get.

Installation of Japanese stepping limestones

Japanese steps must support the weight of a human being, so the thickness is 4 cm for “sawn” Japanese steps and 6 cm (+1 cm) for the “rough” one (which match to natural strata in the quarry).

Make a hole in the lawn with a flat spade at least of the thickness of the Japanese step. Level the bottom so that it is perfectly flat. For better durability, you can make a concrete base for sawn Japanese steps, especially if it is a large custom-made format (e.g. 120 x 30 cm). For “rough” Japanese steps, we recommend a 3 cm thick sand shape background.

To position them make a test laying and mark with the spade the perimeter of the Japanese steps. In terms of spacing, to be comfortable it is necessary that a man’s step allows to go from one Japanese step to another. It is on average 30 cm between 2 tiles.

Japanese steps can be layed in alignment or staggered. It is more a question of aesthetic choice depending on the project.
