To be clear, it is entirely possible to design a pool without a raised edge, aligning it with the level of the surrounding terrace or pool deck. We undertake many projects of this nature. However, we advise against using tiles right up to the pool edge ; in our view, it's important to have coping stones positioned around the entire perimeter of the pool. Here’s why.
Having a seamless edge along your pool provides a contemporary aesthetic. The main argument for a pool without coping is its aesthetic appeal. A secondary consideration is practicality : We usually remember for a long time stubbing our bare feet on something hard (stone coping is one of them). However, be cautious, as rainwater and dirt will easily enter your pool. Consider the cleaning system you'll be using. For instance, you may need to use the pool robot more frequently.
Just because there's no raised edge doesn't mean you should use standard tiles to surround the pool (in our opinion). The area around the pool undergoes heavy use : water movement, diving, sunbathing where you may lie down...
Typically, tiles are 1.5 to 2 cm thick, which is too thin to withstand the demands of a pool edge. We manufacture copings starting from 3 cm (never less). To achieve a level surface with the surrounding paving, adequate preparation is required. Moreover, visually, a 2 cm slab doesn't look appealing from within the pool. A 3 cm coping provides a more structured perimeter. Creating a "belt" with these copings also enhances the overall appearance.
If you still prefer using slabs, refrain from relying on them for exiting the pool; always use a ladder or stairs. Additionally, avoid walking on the edge for diving, as this won't withstand long-term use.
In summary, yes to a pool without a raised edge, but no to a pool without proper copings !
