How to remove a stain on natural stone ?

Flooring, sinks, washbasin… in Burgundy limestone are generally protected with water / oil repellent product, which makes it possible to reduce the absorption of stains of fats, rusts or the emerging of lichens and mosses. On the maintenance and generic protection of natural stone flooring, consult our dedicated page. Also available our FAQs on the maintenance of limestones in the kitchen, or cleaning stone in the bathroom.

Types of stains : black, white, grease, acid, rust, oil, vinegar, fat, wine, coffee...

The stains can be of several origins : either from a human action (coffee, wines, food fats ….) or from nature especially for terraces (mosses, lichens, marks of tree leaves in particular if they are colored …).

Water repellents greatly slow down the absorption of stains and give you time to clean with a sponge (coffee, wine …). However, we do not always realize the presence of a stain. Moreover, the house should be synonymous with relaxation and pleasure, it is useless to be stressed at the slightest stains. Indeed, solutions exist.

Action plans for removing stains from limestone

Generally, we do not recommend the use of white vinegar, bleach or petrochemical products such as Cillit Bang to carry out the maintenance of limestone. However, on an ad hoc and limited basis, white vinegar and bleach are suitable solutions for cleaning a stain. Indeed these anti-limescale products will make it possible to remove or attenuate the stains. For example, dilute bleach (1:10 ratio) and dab the stain. It will thus diminish. Dishwashing liquid is also a very effective degreaser.

We have also developed a range of products that are safe for natural stone: DETERCAL is particularly suitable for stains, moss, and lichens, while being gentle on natural stone. Afterward, use a pH-neutral product like DETERQUOT for regular maintenance. Discover these products on our website, including our SOS STAIN Kit.

Especially for grease stains, we recommend the following grandma's remedy ! Use Sommières clay by applying it to the stain after moistening both the stain and the clay with a spray bottle. Let it sit for 1 to 2 hours. The clay will absorb the stain by drawing it out. Then, remove everything with a vacuum cleaner. We recommend always keeping Sommières clay on hand, as it has many uses. You can find it online or at large DIY stores like Castorama, Leroy Merlin...

Remember that stone naturally forms a protective layer called calcin and develops a patina over time. Thus, after a few weeks, the stain will continue to fade and may even disappear completely.

Be sure to reapply a water-repellent treatment with IMPERPIERRE or apply a permanent treatment such as MINERALISANT after cleaning the stain(s).
