Laying opus incertum

Understanding what "opus incertum" is.

Opus incertum cut is a set of tiles of various sizes and different stones ranging in color from golden-yellow to light beige (Ampilly, Lanvignes, and Semond). These stones originate from the Châtillon-sur-Seine region. Currently, our stock consists exclusively of Ampilly stone. The pallets contain a mix of different finishes (smooth, brushed, monastery). The tiles average around 30 x 40 cm, but there are also smaller and larger pieces (up to 60 x 40 cm).

The price is unbeatable for French natural limestone for your terraces or pathways. This is due to our workshop operation: as manufacturers, we cut and shape our stone blocks into calibrated paving. When we near the end of a block and there isn't enough material left to produce a slab of standard size, we recycle these 'offcuts' into opus incertum. These are therefore multi-format slabs.

We also offer raw opus incertum, where the commonality is multi-format slabs but with a very different appearance. These stones are raw, directly from the quarry without additional finishing. The top of the slab is irregular in shape and has a natural golden-yellow color.

Opus incertum is inherently designed to utilize the entire palette, incorporating even the smallest formats. This allows for a true multi-format paving with a mix of straight and irregular edges. It's a classic way of laying natural stone and is very cost-effective due to the use of stone offcuts.

You will find some photos to see if the visual result suits your needs. We cannot guarantee a minimum slab size, nor can we sort the slabs to exclude smaller ones. This is one of the reasons for the very low price per square meter.

The laying technique is similar to laying stone paving: it involves adhering the slabs to a hard substrate using white adhesive, and using a special natural stone grout. You can learn more about laying techniques for paving on this link.

These stones can also be individually re-cut by you to create rectangular slabs of various sizes. In this case, plan for 1.5 to 2 times more stones than the area to be paved. The price remains very affordable for natural stone, albeit with a relatively significant installation time.

Additional work during installation involves sorting out smaller pieces and re-cutting slabs (often with 2 sides non-linear) to dimensions sufficient for creating squares or rectangles. This will result in a paving with opus pattern but with straight or rectilinear cuts.
