Borders or fences help to structure gravel paths, landscaped areas, or any other outdoor space. Fences are more often used as separators from neighboring properties. The installation principle is similar, with adjustments for dimensions. Indeed, borders or small borders are generally 10 to 20 cm in height, while stakes or fences range from 50 to 150 cm in height.
Mark out the layout using a string line, stakes, and even a garden hose if the borders or fences are being installed in curves. Place intermediate stakes at any angles along the path.
Dig a trench (foundation) 5 cm wider than your border or fence. Additionally, depending on the height, it is recommended to pour a 5 cm layer of clean concrete and install these slabs upright in a draining concrete (to illustrate with a fence 1 meter high, it is necessary to bury 25 cm). This footing also provides a flat foundation, which facilitates installation.
Next, apply mortar to seal the borders. You can use an edging clamp (or border lifter / lifting clamp) to position the stones. Use a mallet to align the borders on top by gently tapping. Check the alignment with a spirit level. Once properly positioned, place mortar pads in front and behind the border to keep it straight. Proceed along the string line using the same methodology.
Wait 24 hours to perform the finishing touches (grouting), and then a few days later, backfill with soil along the sides of the borders. Optionally, replant some grass to quickly establish a lawn.
