We have all heard these terms in the field of plumbing, but we are often unsure about the meaning of each and the differences between the two.
Both are types of faucets that we can use for sinks, basins, showers, or bathtubs.
The difference lies in the control of the water flow. A single lever (or handle) that regulates both the flow and the temperature is a mixer tap. The mixer, on the other hand, has two handles, one for cold water and one for hot water. The mixer often allows for a higher flow rate than the mixer tap.
The traditional mixer is being overtaken by the mixer tap for one main reason: its economic advantage. The mixer tap allows for quicker attainment of the desired temperature, thereby reducing energy and water bills. Depending on the brand, the mixer tap is often more expensive to purchase.
The mixer remains the go-to choice when looking for a traditional style faucet. It is still very popular in kitchens and also provides a retro look to bathrooms.
At Le Comptoir des Pierres, we offer both options to meet your needs, but not necessarily in identical models. Depending on the design of each model, we may choose to offer either a mixer or a mixer tap, without necessarily providing both.
Yes and no! It depends on whether the mixer is a bridge faucet. In this case, you will need to plan for two faucet holes (35 mm diameter). If the mixer has its two handles (hot water/cold water) on the central axis, there will be, as with the mixer tap, only one hole.
Another variant that can impact your sink: does your faucet have a separate spray head ? In this case, you will also need to specify this if you are not purchasing your faucet from us. The spacing is different between a bridge faucet and a faucet with a spray head; therefore, if you request two faucet holes, please specify the intended use (or even the desired spacing from the center of the holes).
Just a reminder : our sinks and basins are made of solid stone, which means they do not have an overflow. Remember to turn off your mixer tap or mixer before leaving the room (in case you have closed the drain)!
