Our actions for the Climate

At Comptoir des Pierres, we work daily to offer you exceptional products that respect the environment while minimizing our ecological impact on the planet (manufacturing processes, building management, responsible purchasing...).

Burgundy limestone and sustainable development

Material noble and natural, Burgundy limestone fits perfectly into a sustainable development approach.

The commitment to rehabilitate quarries at the end of their exploitation is not the only parameter that fits into the logic of sustainable development and environmental protection of Burgundy natural stone.

The valorization of stone by-products, recycling of machining sludge, water recycling used in workshops, and the durability of Burgundy natural stone are also integral parts of this approach. Moreover, stone generates very little waste or pollution during its processing.

It does not require cement or other binding agents. This natural material also does not need chemical treatment to ensure its viability.

Stone breathes, does not produce any toxic emissions. It thus provides a healthy environment inside the house. It absorbs moisture and promotes energy efficiency.

Its insulating qualities make it a temperature regulator, thus avoiding overconsumption of heating in winter and air conditioning in summer.

Finally, it does not require finishing products, naturally patinates over time, and water is its best ally to maintain its natural beauty.

Production process of our stone workshop

We have implemented measures to reduce our water consumption and to better manage our limestone slurry. Indeed, stone cutting operations consume significant amounts of water (for machine operation) and produce slurry consisting of water and stone dust.

Closed-loop water system

97% of the water used is in a closed-loop system, meaning that we continuously reuse the same water to operate our digital tools (saws, CNC machines...). Only 3% of the annual volume comes from the city water supply, which is absorbed by the stone during the cutting and machining process and cannot be reduced or eliminated.

This efficiency is made possible by the installation of 57 linear meters of drains within the workshop, directing water to a settling tank. The settling tank separates clear water from limestone sludge. The clear water is then redirected back into our workshop.

Calcareous sludge from our stone workshop

The calcareous sludges correspond to the limestone that has been machined (removed) to create your stone works : the interior of a sink or a basin, for example. A sink is machined using diamond wheels on our CNC machines; the interior of the basin is evacuated in the form of sludge (a mixture of water and stone dust) through our channels.

The sludges are directed with the water to our settling tank. Once separated from the water, these sludges dry and become compact. We donate them to farmers who use them to neutralize acidity in nearby lands around our workshop.

Electricity and Lighting

We have replaced all incandescent bulbs/neon lights with LED systems in our workshops, offices, and showrooms. Similarly, we have reduced the operating hours for our exterior panels (Le Comptoir des Pierres signage) and now turn them off from 9 PM to 6 AM during winter. Fluorescent tube lights have also been replaced with LEDs. The highly energy-consuming electric underfloor heating has been deactivated and replaced with a heat pump.

Solar panels on the roofs of our workshop are under consideration. In case of power failure, electric shutters have been replaced with shutters equipped with photovoltaic cells.

Means of transport

We prioritize train travel for the management and staff between our main site in Comblanchien, Burgundy, and our showrooms in Île-de-France (Paris - 75) and PACA (La Crau - 83). For group outings such as quarry visits or construction sites, we carpool whenever possible.

At our Comblanchien site, we have installed electric charging stations for electric and hybrid vehicles. These two stations are available free of charge during our opening hours for our employees, clients, and suppliers.

Our suppliers (stone quarry, stone cutting tools...)

Beyond purchasing Burgundy limestone blocks, which are nearby, we prioritize local suppliers such as Derognat, located 100 meters from our workshop. They provide diamond tools specifically for stone cutting, as well as pallets and crates made from wood sourced from Bourgogne Franche-Comté and Auvergne Rhône-Alpes regions.

Miscellaneous - Eco-Friendly Practices

Eco-Gestures - All these small actions, when combined and practiced by everyone, have an impact on our environment. We only print when absolutely necessary, and in black and white. We limit the temperature in offices and showrooms to 19 degrees Celsius. Whenever possible, we consider purchasing reconditioned products (such as phones)...

We strive to continuously improve our approach to these key issues for the climate and future generations.
