Buffon limestone – Natural stone from the region of Châtillon-sur-Seine (North Côte d’Or). Natural white or beige stone. Light colored stone.
The Buffon quarry located in Etrochey offers us mainly light colors (white to beige). This stone is only intended for interior projects and shows all its charms in honed finish. Some level in the quarry (or vein) of the Buffon limestone are particularly suited to heavy traffic and are thus used for shopping centers, public places …
Several levels exist in Buffon’s quarry with relatively large variations in colors. We have selected 5 “types” of Buffon limestone for you. Depending on their characteristic, we cut them either horizontally or in the direction of the bed of the quarry; that is to say in the direction of sedimentation or vertically. A vertical cut highlights the sedimentation beds and thus makes it possible to obtain a more veined, more textured pavement.
Discover our photos on the carousel. By clicking on these you will see the subtitle that specifies the “type” of Buffon limestone, the cut and the finish.

Opus in Natural Burgundy Limestone. We work on 2 types of opus incertum : the opus incertum – Rough and the opus incertum – Sawn
In general, opus incertum is a stone with various and irregular sizes (length, width, thickness). The opus incertum should not be confused with the Roman opus, which is a specific layout.
Opus incertum is a stone with irregular sizes (length, width, thickness). Its warm colour and thickness make it an ideal choice on the terrace, in the driveway or in the outside courtyard. These stones can also be used as wall capping.
The opus incertum – Rough is directly extracted from a stratum (or bench) of the quarry and only cut. Indeed, we do not act on the surface of the slab to keep its natural or raw side. Its warm colour and thickness make it an ideal choice for outdoor patio, driveway or courtyard. This stone native to Yonne Area is Protected Geographical Indication since June 2018 as part of the classification of limestones of Burgundy.
These limestones can also be used in wall capping stone (with the same natural finish as our coverings) or in wall construction (on this subject, do not hesitate to discover our section dedicated to walls)
Our stones are selected and sorted by us to select the most flat tiles possible ideal in paving or wall top for their visual rendering. However this raw finish is necessarily synonymous with a more pronounced irregularity than the paving and opus incertum sawn.
The opus incertum brut is sold per m2 with 3 thicknesses available 2-3 cm, 3-5 cm and 5-7 cm.
Opus in natural stone.
We work on 2 types of opus incertum n: opus incertum brut in Burgundy stone and opus incertum sawn. In general, opus incertum is a stone with varied and irregular formats (length and width). We must not confuse the opus incertum with the Roman opus which is a specific layout.
The sawn opus incertum is a set of slabs in various formats made from different stones, ranging in color from golden-yellow to light beige (Ampilly, Lanvignes, and Semond). These stones originate from the Châtillon-sur-Seine region. Currently, our stock consists exclusively of Ampilly stone. The pallets contain a mix of different finishes (honed, brushed, monastery). The average slab size is 30 x 40 cm, but there are also smaller and larger pieces (up to 60 x 40 cm).
The price is unbeatable for French natural limestone, making it an excellent choice for terraces or pathways. This is due to our workshop process : as a manufacturer, we cut and shape our stone blocks into calibrated paving. When we reach the end of a block and there is not enough material left for a standard-sized slab, we recycle these "offcuts" into opus incertum, creating multi-format slabs.
These stones can also be trimmed by hand to create rectangular slabs in various formats (see photos 1, 3, and 4). In this case, you should plan for twice the amount of stone needed for the surface area to be covered. While the price remains very affordable for natural stone, the installation requires a significant amount of work.
We always have stock calibrated in thickness 2 cm.
Note: These opus patterns are sold by default without the IG Pierre de Bourgogne designation and are simply labeled as opus in Châtillonnais stone. Upon request, we can provide opus with the IG Pierre de Bourgogne designation.
